Biloxi may have been hit by one of the most destructive hurricanes to date, yet Biloxi is coming back in a big way! Being from southern california I was used to earthquakes and never in my life did I think that I would be dealing with a Monster such as Katrina! The Lighthouse survived as you can see, it's over 100 years old! katrina basically wiped out all Historic homes on the beach as well as many homes inland. It looked like a War zone! My husband and I sat in the room with the animals and batteries and radio. I clung to my bible and Rosary (prayer is power)! Approx 330am we lost all power, and the errie sounds of wind and rain and pieces of debri flying were sickening. On the radio, the news stations were overwhemed with calls and these calls were from people literally trapped on their diningroom table as the flood waters slowly crept into their homes and started to rise, you could hear the sheer panic and cries for help, not even emergency crew could go out, the feeling of being helpless was aweful, just a brick feeling in your stomach. I never prayed so hard in my life. I can hardly write this blog as I still cannot believe what nature is capable of doing! After over 12 hours, people started to slowly emerge from their homes, looking dazed and some in complete shock. there were electrical lines all over every street, the national guard was here and directing traffic with huge guns, yes, some people took advantage of the hurricane and looted shattered stores, which made me sick! As we drove around, so many places were completely gone (or) partially gone, it was hard to remember the streets to turn on, even after being a resident for over ten years. All street lights were dangling, All street signs were gone. cement steps that led to peoples homes were all some had left. No power, No water. It was then I relized how very much we all take things for granted? You know like the basics, power, running water, fighting with a loved one over something stupid, etc. It was AMAZING the way people pulled together to help one another! It was a sign of HOPE! Today people are still building back their lives, and making GREAT progress!! The casinos are up and running and the city put up new street lamps and signs and work is still in progress. Im proud to be a resident of Biloxi and I am proud of the people! The Red cross and The Salvation army were here. My husband and I were in our backyard picking up debris and the salvation army stopped by and gave us a hot meal with a cold soda and a candy bar. we were most grateful as we were stressed, tired, hot and very hungry and thirsty. God Bless Them. Yes, there are some bad apples out there, Yet the GOOD PEOPLE FAR EXCEED the bad!! The proof is in the pudding! Biloxi is only getting better day by day and will continue to do so! GOD BLESS ALL THOSE GOOD HEARTED PEOPLE FROM ALL STATES WHO HELPED DURING KATRINA! I am very grateful to many, yet especially The Salvation Army Who Was Always in All Areas!!
